Course Overview

This training course can help save lives, helping learners to deal with medical and trauma situations in prehospital environments.


FREC 3 is offered in conjunction with Patronus Rescue International.  This qualification is on the Regulated Qualification Framework (RQF) and is regulated by OFQUAL.

Who is the course for?

This course requires no previous First Aid training to enrol (though desirable). The course is ideal for those seeking a career in the emergency services and ambulance service and individuals working within high risk environments, including:


  • Event first aiders
  • Fire fighters
  • Police fire arms and medics
  • Close protection operatives (this qualification is recognised by the Security Industries Authority [SIA])
  • Expedition leaders UK and overseas
  • Journalists working overseas

What is the assessment method?

Guided learning hours and continuous assessment. Assessments for this course include:


  • 13 x practical assessments
  • 3 x theory assessments (multiple choice questions)
  • 4 x skills test
  • Continuous assessments throughout the course


The course certificate is valid for three years on completion of the course.

What is the duration of the course?

The course modules and assessments are delivered over a five day learning period.

What topics are covered?

Topics covered in FREC Level 3 include:


• Adult, child and infant BLS with AED
• Emergency oxygen administration
• Bag Valve Mask (BVM) and pocket mask
• Trauma and catastrophic bleeding
• Head and spinal injuries
• Shock and circulation
• Sudden poisoning
• Burns and scalds
• Airway management
• Environmental exposure
• Responding to life threatening medical conditions


The Level 3 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (FREC) is accepted as covering all learning outcomes and assessment criteria contained within the Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work qualification. As such this qualification exceeds the HSE’s standard requirements for those acting as a workplace first aider and also covers a number of additional training needs that are often identified in ‘higher risk’ working environments.
