A big thanks to the Officers, NCOs and soldiers of 22 Engineer Regiment for hosting SMS Training for their Annual Regimental Boxing Tournament.
It was a great evening with first class entertainment, and every participant gave maximum effort from start to finish. The evening provided the opportunity for these young warriors to demonstrate their skill and endurance – and above all, the indomitable spirit of champions.
The determination of these athletes to succeed epitomises their spirit to enhance their personal and professional development and to succeed in their careers. Some have already undertaken the Cert HE Skills for the Workplace programme. They are setting their sights on an academic qualification which will support their current carer in the Armed Forces and also their future transition.
So what’s Skills for the Workplace all about?
Our tutors all have successful real-life work experience within the business sector.
Most are still self-employed.
All are friendly (and fabulous!)
None are ‘traditional’ academics.
What Cert HE covers
The six modules that make up the course are:
- Academic and Employability Skills
- Professional Career Development
- Effective Team Working and Communication
- Problem Solving and Decision Making
- Digital Skills and Research Methods
- Managing Enterprise in the 21st Century
The Cert HE course enables students to use workplace experiences to inform their studies throughout each module. They are able to apply their new knowledge and skills to their own workplace, which improves their employability.
All students create a professional online presence.
This allows them to demonstrate:
- Their understanding of personal brand
- Their digital skills
- How to use self-promotion and marketing in interviews and for career progression
Our students tells us that the most important skill they gain from this course is the ability to communicate effectively and with confidence.
This had led on to:
- Progression from part-time to full-time employment
- Promotion from Supervisor to Manager
- Confidence to go for and secure the job they always wanted
- Leading and managing change
- An increased ability to solve problems and make decisions
- Leading teams
60% of our current students say that the flexibility of the qualification is a huge plus
Armed Forces personnel and their spouses tell us that flexibility without a financial burden has been the driver to continue serving, rather than transition out of the Armed Forces. Those who have already made the transition to ‘Civvy Street’ and undertaken the Cert HE qualification have been able to obtain roles in areas such as Project Management.
It all starts from here: Cert HE Skills for the Workplace (SfWP)
What you need to know:
The programme is delivered over 10 months and is designed to fit around a student’s daily routine.
The course takes places in the evenings and on weekends, and therefore works around students’ full-time employment.
All teaching is project based, linking theory with practice, because we want to ensure that each module is focused on real workplace situations and challenges.
Most students pay nothing up front and won’t have to pay anything back until they earn over £25,000 a year as a graduate.
Assessment is through work-based assignments, team-based projects and presentations. There are no exams.
Cert HE SfWP is an internationally recognised professional and academic qualification delivered by University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD).
Successful students can achieve a Level 4 Certificate in Leadership and Management awarded by the ILM.
There is an opportunity to gain a BA (Hons) degree in Leadership and Management Skills for the Workplace, with a cap and gown graduation and a Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management from the ILM.
